Mossley Hill Map

Three and a half miles southeast of Liverpool city centre, Mossley Hill borders the suburbs of Aigburth, Allerton, Childwall and Wavertree. Predominantly residential, it is considered one of the more affluent parts of Liverpool, with housing that ranges from semi-detached and detached properties to terraced streets. The population recorded at the 2001 Census was 12,650, rising to 13,816 by 2011. Two railway stations serve the suburb: Mossley Hill station on Rose Lane and West Allerton station on Booker Avenue, both running regular services into Liverpool city centre in around 11 minutes, with onward connections to Warrington, Manchester Oxford Road and Birmingham via Liverpool South Parkway.

Schools and Student Life

Mossley Hill carries an unlikely footnote in music and broadcasting history through Dovedale Primary School, whose former pupils include George Harrison, John Lennon, Peter Sissons, Jimmy Tarbuck and John Power. Lennon later attended what is now Calderstones School – then called Quarry Bank – which lies close by. Liverpool College, which operated as a fee-paying independent school until 2013, is also within Mossley Hill, and the Liverpool Blue Coat School, the city’s only grammar school, is a short distance away in neighbouring Wavertree. The suburb has two student accommodation complexes tied to the University of Liverpool: the Greenbank Halls of Residence and the now-closed Carnatic Halls of Residence.

Parks, Culture and Sport

Greenbank Park is Mossley Hill’s local park and one of the most visited in Liverpool. Two further popular parks, Sefton Park and Calderstones Park, are nearby. The Millennium Green, reached from Penny Lane or Oakdale Road, is a small green space with wildflower fields and woodland, widely used for dog walking. Sudley House, one of seven venues run by National Museums Liverpool, holds paintings by Gainsborough and Turner. For sport, Mossley Hill Athletic Club is a voluntary club covering archery, crown green bowling, cricket, football, rugby, hockey, running and tennis, while Mossley Hill LFC competes in the Northern Combination Women’s Football League. Spire Hospital Liverpool on Greenbank Road, formerly Lourdes Hospital, is Liverpool’s first private hospital and faces Greenbank Park directly. The suburb falls across two parliamentary constituencies – Liverpool Riverside and Liverpool Wavertree – and is represented on Liverpool City Council primarily through the Mossley Hill ward, with parts also extending into the Greenbank and Church wards.
