Netherley Map

Spread across the eastern side of Liverpool, Netherley occupies a largely residential patch of south Merseyside, bounded by Belle Vale to the west and lying close to Huyton, Tarbock and Halewood. Roughly 44% of the area falls within the green belt, which has limited industrial development and given Netherley a noticeably leafy character compared with much of inner Liverpool. The surrounding land is predominantly farmland and countryside, setting it apart from the more densely built-up parts of the city.

History and Development

Netherley was built in 1968 on farmland at the edge of Gateacre, constructed to rehouse tenants displaced from substandard housing in Liverpool city centre. The neighbourhood grew quickly, and Lee Manor High School – originally named Netherley Community Comprehensive School when it opened in 1970 – became one of its defining institutions before closing in 2000 following a name change in the early 1990s. During the 1980s, a significant portion of the estate’s flats and maisonettes were cleared away: demolitions between 1983 and 1985 made room for new housing, and Lee Valley Housing took over management of around 1,700 council properties in 2003, carrying out improvements across the estate. The area’s main employer for many years, HPL Jars and Containers on Caldway Drive, was bought out by M&H Plastics in 2006 and production left the area after more than three decades.

Schools and Local Facilities

Education in Netherley includes St Gregory’s Catholic Primary School, which received a strong Ofsted report in 2005 and has expanded over the years to absorb pupils from the now-closed Cross Farm School. Norman Pannell Primary School is another well-used school in the area. Caldway Drive is also the current home of the Belle Vale Junior Football League, which relocated from playing fields in nearby Belle Vale when a new school was built there.
