Orrell Park Map

Perched on a raised hillock in the northern part of Liverpool, Orrell Park is a small residential district in Merseyside, lying between the larger neighbouring areas of Aintree and Walton-on-the-Hill. It falls within the Liverpool Walton Parliamentary constituency and has a character shaped largely by the Victorian era, with patches of Edwardian terraces and post-war housing filling the gaps left by wartime bomb damage.

History and Architecture

The district took shape from around 1850 onwards, built primarily to house workers and managers connected to the Bootle docks during the rapid industrial and maritime expansion of the British Empire. Before that period, the land was part of the Earl of Sefton’s estate, used mainly as pasture and orchards. The street names across Orrell Park carry clear echoes of the era in which they were laid out – Victoria Drive, Albert Drive, Alexandra Drive, Kitchener Drive, Montgomery Road and Redvers Drive each commemorate a prominent British figure of the time, from Queen Victoria and Prince Albert to General Sir Redvers Buller and Viscount Montgomery of Alamein.

Transport and Getting Around

Orrell Park railway station, built in 1906, is the main link to Liverpool city centre and now operates as part of the Merseyrail metro network, with trains running roughly every 20 minutes from early morning until midnight. Bus routes connecting directly to the city centre depart from nearby Walton Vale, about a ten-minute walk from the district. The two central thoroughfares, Orrell Lane and Moss Lane, carry a local ASDA supermarket and a range of small independent shops.

Local Venues and Points of Interest

The Orrell Park Bar – still widely known as the “OPB” – began life as a ballroom built in 1927 and has since become a well-known nightclub and concert venue. Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, Ringo Starr and Jerry Lee Lewis have all performed there. Devonfield Gardens holds a Green Flag Award and is recorded as the smallest Green Flag-winning green space in England, regularly hosting community events. The Orrell Park Hotel on Orrell Lane is a 12-bedroomed family-run property, converted from two Edwardian houses in 1962, refurbished and reopened in 2013 and extended in 2024 with the addition of Sarus, a restaurant specialising in tapas. Orrell Park Community Centre, more than 40 years old and directly opposite the railway station, runs activities, classes and free events throughout the year.
