Sitting in the north-east of Liverpool, Tuebrook takes its name from the Tew Brook, a tributary of the River Alt. The brook itself has almost entirely disappeared underground through piping and culverting, though one last exposed section survives behind a disused cinema. At the 2001 census, the area had a population of 14,490.
Streets, Shops, and Local Character
The main commercial strip runs along the A5049 West Derby Road, an east-to-west arterial route out of Liverpool city centre that bisects the area. One unusual feature of the shopping street is that all the shops sit on one side only, a result of extensive demolition carried out during road-widening work. Tuebrook Market operates here, and Tuebrook Police Station, though closed to the public, remains in use by Merseyside Police. On West Derby Road, The Musical Box has been trading since 1947, founded by Dorothy Cain and run by the same family across four generations, making it Liverpool’s oldest independent record shop. Two secondary schools are close by: West Derby School on Mill Bank and St Francis of Assisi in Newsham Park.
Parks, Heritage, and Getting Around
Newsham Park lies within the area, alongside the Victorian Grade I listed St John’s Church. For travel into the city centre and to neighbouring places including Aigburth, Bootle, Croxteth, Huyton, Old Swan, and Stockbridge Village, several bus routes run regularly along West Derby Road, including numbers 12, 13, 15, 18, 62, and 68. A railway bridge carries the Canada Dock Branch over West Derby Road; this line once had a passenger station at Tue Brook until closure in 1948, and today operates as a busy freight route between Tuebrook sidings near Edge Hill and the Port of Liverpool. In December 2019, Liverpool City Council commissioned a feasibility study into reopening the Canada Dock Branch to passenger traffic. A proposed Merseytram line was also planned to run through Tuebrook, but the project was abandoned after government funding was refused. Tuebrook falls within the Liverpool West Derby Parliamentary constituency.
