The Beatles Story occupies a striking position on the historic Royal Albert Dock in Liverpool, bringing together the full arc of the band’s history under one roof. Opened on 1 May 1990, the museum was devised and created by Mike and Bernadette Byrne. Ownership now rests with Mersey Ferries, which is part of Merseytravel, the regional transport authority for Merseyside.
What the Museum Contains
Visitors move through full recreations of some of the most famous venues in rock history, including The Casbah Coffee Club, The Cavern Club and Abbey Road Studios. Alongside these reconstructed spaces, the museum displays physical artefacts of considerable historical weight – John Lennon’s spectacles, George Harrison’s first guitar and an extensive account of the British Invasion. The solo careers of all four Beatles are covered in detail, making the exhibition far broader in scope than a straightforward account of the band’s peak years.
Background and Recognition
Before The Beatles Story opened in 1990, Liverpool had made earlier attempts at housing a permanent Beatles exhibition. The Cavern Mecca ran from 1981 to 1984, followed by Beatles City from 1984 to 1986. The current museum effectively succeeded both. In 2015, it was recognised as one of the best tourist attractions in the United Kingdom, drawing visitors from around the world to the Royal Albert Dock site.
